Scott Lane
Scott Lane is founder and CEO of Speeki, an Australian lawyer-turned-entrepreneur who built and sold a global compliance intelligence firm before turning to AI-native sustainability assurance — now pushing to make audit as easy to buy as anything else.
Short, attributable lines for media use — each ready to quote on its own.
“Assurance builds trust. Great assurance builds trust and value.”
— Scott Lane on ESG assurance“Audit has been sold the wrong way for decades — a slow, bespoke engagement only large companies can navigate.”
— Scott Lane on Democratizing audit“Sustainability and AI aren't two separate beats anymore. They're one discipline now.”
— Scott Lane on AI-enabled assurance“A ratings analyst doesn't want a good story. They want an evidence chain: where a number came from, who signed off, what changed since last year.”
— Scott Lane on ESG ratings readiness“Behavioural change, not better systems, is the real work behind compliance and sustainability.”
— Scott Lane on Board governanceWhat clients and colleagues say about working with Scott.
“We found Scott incredibly helpful in guiding us through our assurance project — he knows exactly how it works, and where we'd struggle.”
— Client, ESG Assurance Engagement“Scott is incredibly knowledgeable at quickly identifying why issues are happening in our business. He helps us pinpoint the causal link with the right questions, letting us reach that realization ourselves rather than just telling us the answer.”
— Assurance & Certification Client“We've had several executive education courses delivered by Scott — he's a great trainer who takes the time to explain complex things in simple terms.”
— Executive Education Participant“Scott always brings a business lens that reminds us why sustainability and compliance need to serve the business and our customers.”
— Assurance & Certification ClientScott trained as a lawyer in Australia before moving in-house across Asia, as Associate General Counsel at Sun Microsystems and then General Counsel APAC at Hitachi Data Systems. In 2006 he founded The Red Flag Group, and built it over fourteen years into a global risk and compliance intelligence firm serving Fortune 500 companies across dozens of countries, before selling it to the London Stock Exchange Group in 2020.
On exit, he kept two things: a whistleblowing platform, and ETHIC Intelligence, a France-based, ISO 37001-accredited certification body. He combined them to found Speeki, now an ISO 17021-1 accredited ESG assurance and certification body operating across more than 100 countries, built around a simple premise: assurance builds trust, and great assurance builds trust and value. His work centres on making sustainability and ESG claims verifiable, not just publishable, and on putting AI directly into how that verification gets done.
He built Speeki's agentic AI auditor, Nicole, to change the economics of assurance: more evidence reviewed, faster, without loosening the standard a board is held to. That work sits at the centre of how Scott thinks and writes, sustainability and AI aren't two separate beats, they're one discipline now.
Scott's other conviction is that audit has been sold the wrong way for decades: a slow, bespoke, heavy professional-services engagement that only large companies can navigate. He's pushing Speeki toward a retail model instead, an online shop where audit and certification can be scoped and bought directly, no lengthy sales process required, so mid-market companies get the same rigour without the overhead.
Scott holds ISO Lead Auditor certification across eight management-system standards, including AI management (ISO 42001), anti-bribery (ISO 37001), compliance (ISO 37301) and information security (ISO 27001), is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a NACD Certified Director, and is completing an Executive Masters in Sustainable Transformation at IMD, on top of earlier executive education at Harvard Business School, Wharton, INSEAD and MIT.
He personally delivers Speeki's executive education programme — 60-plus specialist courses spanning ISO 37001 anti-bribery management, ISO 37301 compliance, ISO 14001 environmental management, ISO 42001 AI governance, CSRD and ESRS reporting, GHG accounting, human rights due diligence, and sustainability assurance under ISSA 5000. It's the same practitioner-level detail that shows up in his writing: taught from real audit and assurance work, not adapted from a slide deck.
Scott treats governance, sustainability, AI and international business as fiduciary problems, a board's responsibility, not a specialist function to delegate, and argues that behavioural change, not better systems, is the real work behind compliance and sustainability.
“Assurance builds trust. Great assurance builds trust and value.”

The AHA Framework: ESG Assurance Human-AI Task Allocation
IMD — Executive Masters in Sustainable Transformation (EMST) capstone · In progressScott's capstone research asks a specific question: where does human judgment remain irreplaceable in AI-augmented ESG assurance? The project is building the AHA Framework from empirical research rather than testing it against one, grounded in Speeki's own AI auditor, Nicole, as the primary case study. It triangulates three sources: structured interviews with practitioners and clients, analysis of Nicole's own task logs and quality records, and a clause-by-clause read of ISSA 5000, AA1000AS v3 and the IIA's 2025 standards to map where human judgment is required but left undefined.
Return on Planet (ROP): A Metric for Executive Compensation
Speeki — open framework for boards and compensation committees · In progressScott is developing Return on Planet (ROP), a strategy-first metric that ties executive pay to planetary impact with the same rigour boards already apply to return on equity. It responds to a measurable failure: the average ESG metric drives less than 5% of performance-linked pay and explains under 1% of the variation in what executives actually earn, leaving accountability to training-completion targets, ratings bumps and discretionary committee scores that are designed to be achieved. Rather than importing an external checklist, ROP starts with the board's own strategy — the board selects which environmental pillars matter, weights them, chooses independently verifiable indicators, and sets targets rigorous enough to actually be missed, all reduced to a single 0–100 composite score as easy to disclose as ROE. Its distinctive move is a credibility layer: governance pillars for speak-up culture, whistleblower effectiveness and anti-bribery controls (benchmarked to ISO 37001), plus a planetary-culture pillar, on the argument that environmental numbers cannot be trusted unless the organisation's integrity and culture make them credible and durable. The model is open for any board to adapt and is being paired with an interactive calculator and methodology guide for compensation committees.
Scott Lane built and sold a global compliance firm before arguing that audit itself is stuck in the wrong business model — and shows what it looks like when AI and a retail buying experience replace the traditional engagement.
Scott is open to one or two additional non-executive director appointments, alongside his existing NED role, bringing 25+ years of international leadership, a founder-operator track record (built and sold The Red Flag Group to LSEG), and board-level credentials across governance, AI, compliance and sustainability.
